Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Natural Resources, Ecology and Environmental Protection was held in Minsk

On May 15, 2024, a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly Commission on Natural Resources, Ecology and Environmental Protection chaired by Ms. Zhanna Chernyavskaya, recently elected Head of the Commission, was held in Minsk.

The Commission was attended by Mr. Igor Bolotov, Deputy Minister for Emergency Situations, Ms. Olga Lugovskaya, Head of Gosatomnadzor and Ms. Ekaterina Shmeleva, Deputy Head of the Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Legacy Management Division.

Among the topics discussed during the meeting was the preparation of a joint proposal to develop the Program of Joint Activities of Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Union State to Overcome the Negative Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident.

The purpose of the new program under the development is to establish conditions for the formation of social and economic capacity of radioactively contaminated regions of Belarus and Russia and to improve the living standards of citizens affected by radiation in the wake of the Chernobyl NPP accident.

The Permanent Committee of the Union State endorsed the development of a new program, implementation of which is planned for 2025-2029.

The deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly encouraged the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters to accelerate the efforts to harmonize the joint proposal to develop the Program of Joint Activities of Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Union State to Overcome Negative Consequences Caused by the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident. The Permanent Committee of the Union State was requested to assist the state customers in the development of the required documents and implementation of the established conciliation procedures.
