Since the beginning of the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant, the Republic of Belarus has been accumulating valuable experience in establishing nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure.

According to the IAEA, such experience is of interest for newcomer countries implementing their first nuclear program.

In this regard, at the request of the IAEA, Gosatomnadzor arranged a fellowship on nuclear and radiation safety of nuclear facilities for representatives of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA)

During the first meeting, which took place on November 11, the presentations on the development of the regulatory infrastructure for nuclear and radiation safety in the Republic of Belarus, as well as on the formation of the regulatory legal framework in this area of activity, were introduced to the guests.

In their turn, ENRRA representatives informed the Belarusian colleagues about the Egyptian nuclear energy program and regulatory infrastructure.

The guests got acquainted with the main stages of the NPP life cycle licensing, the procedure for reviewing and evaluating documents justifying safety of NPPs. The Egyptian colleagues expressed strong interest in the Strategy for Spent Nuclear Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management.

The agenda of the fellowship includes learning of the regulatory control process and supervisory activities during commissioning of the NPP unit, as well as state supervision of nuclear and radiation safety at the NPP. The CNRS will familiarize the participants with technical support organizations. Also attention will be paid to regulatory issues in the field of emergency preparedness.

During the fellowship the guests will visit the Republican Center for Emergency Management and Response, the Life Safety Education Center, the Information Center in Ostrovets city and the training center of the Belarusian NPP.

Furthermore, a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Energy will be held.

The visit will last until November 22.
