A working meeting on the implementation of the Strategy of Radioactive Waste Management was held
Strategy of Radioactive Waste Management was approved by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 128 of February 15, 2023. It states the main directions of improvement of the national system of radioactive waste management.
The application experience of the mentioned Strategy highlighted some issues which are subject to discussion with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Energy, Belenergo, BelNPP, BelRAO, Belnipienergoprom, State Scientific Institution “JIPNR-Sosny”, Specialized Unitary Enterprise “Ekores”, International Sakharov Environmental Institute of BSU, Belarusian State Technological University.
Attendants of the meeting considered the presented volumes and projected calculations of radioactive waste generation taking into account the operational experience of the Belarusian NPP, reviewed capacities of radioactive waste storage facilities of the Belarusian NPP with regard to their actual level of filling, examined possibility of the temporary storage of operational radioactive waste on the territory of the specialized enterprise for radioactive waste management “Ecores” as well as regulatory approaches to exempt from control materials and substances containing radionuclides.
Issues related to siting of the radioactive waste disposal facility were addressed as well. Representatives of Gosatomnadzor emphasized the necessity to consider specific features of the territory of the Republic of Belarus and the results of the conducted tests, depending on the depth of embedding of the nuclear facility and the additional load from this structure, determined in each particular case by the relevant survey program. Facility safety, in view of its location, is to be verified by a safety assessment. Such an approach takes into account the soil type and site-specific conditions.
In the course of the discussion of the outlined issues, as well as measures aimed at the construction of the radioactive waste disposal facility, the attendees pointed out the feasibility of updating certain provisions of the Strategy of Radioactive Waste Management in accordance with the gained experience.
