Gosatomnadzor held a working meeting on the issues of radioactive waste management

On February 15, 2024, Gosatomnadzor arranged a working meeting with Mr. Denis Moroz the Deputy Minister of Energy, representatives of design and scientific institutes, as well as RUE “BelRAO” to prepare for the site selection for radioactive waste disposal facility.

During the discussion the parties outlined the challenges of the first stage of the Radioactive Waste Management Strategy approved by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 128 dated February 15, 2023, related to the approaches to the site selection for the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility.

Gosatomnadzor noted the necessity to pass through all stages of the life cycle of the future RWDF in full compliance with the requirements of norms and rules to ensure nuclear and radiation safety.

In particular, regarding the norms and rules “Siting of Nuclear Materials Storage Facilities, Radioactive Waste Storage Facilities, Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities” approved by the Resolution of the Ministry for Emergency Situations No. 48 dated August 18, 2022, it was suggested to apply the guidelines on nuclear and radiation safety “Selection of a Site for a Near-Surface Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility” in order to comply with their requirements.

According to the results of the working meeting, it was agreed to involve experts in order to define the weighting coefficients of criteria aimed at the subsequent selection of a site for the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility.
