Meeting of the Expert Group No. 2 of the CIS Basic Organization was held in Bishkek

On April 9, 2024, a regular meeting of the Expert Group No. 2 “Development of the Document on Cooperation of the CIS Member States on the Issues of Radioactive Waste Management and Decommissioning of Nuclear and Radiation Hazardous Facilities” of the CIS Basic Organization on the issues
of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management and decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities. Ms. Svetlana Shestovskaya, Head of the Division of Strategic Planning and Coordination of the Gosatomnadzor Activity, took part in the meeting. The event was also attended via videoconference by Mr. Dmitri Pavlov, Head of the Division of Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Legacy Facilities Management, Ms. Katherine Shmeleva, Deputy Head of the above mentioned Division and Ms. Larisa Basalay, Head of the Regulatory Affairs Division.

Mr. Azamat Mambetov, First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, welcomed participants of the Expert Group No. 2 and emphasized the importance of continuing work to bring nuclear legacy facilities into a safe condition.

In the course of the event, further activity on the preparation of a draft intergovernmental agreement on cooperation of the CIS member states on bringing nuclear legacy facilities into a safe condition and organization of its structure was continued, and a discussion of approaches to the formation of a register of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities of the CIS member states was held. Information reports on the experience obtained in rehabilitating territories affected by radiation, including the socio-economic development of those regions, were presented.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, with the support of the Basic Organization (JSC TVEL), arranged a visit to nuclear legacy facilities near the Min Kush settlement in Kyrgyzstan (Kak, Dalnee, Tuyuk-Suu, and Taldy-Bulak tailing dumps), thus demonstrating the commitment to safety and openness as the highest priorities for the relevant decision-making.
