Gosatomnadzor took part in the session of interdepartmental working group

On February 12, 2024, the Ministry of Energy held a regular meeting of the interdepartmental working group to coordinate the implementation of the Plan of Basic Organizational Measures on the Construction of a Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility in the Republic of Belarus.

In the course of the session the working group chaired by Mr. Denis Moroz, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Energy, got acquainted with the results of a set of research and survey works performed by RUE «Belnipienergoprom» with the involvement of relevant organizations to identify priority areas for the site of radioactive waste disposal facility.

Consolidated report on determination of competitive areas for the site of disposal of Class 3 and 4 radioactive wastes and long-term storage of Class 2 radioactive waste formed on the basis of archival and stock materials analysis was taken into consideration and discussed.

Representatives of Gosatomnadzor presented information to the members of the interdepartmental working group regarding the approaches to selecting a site for radioactive waste disposal facilities, as outlined in the Radioactive Waste Management Strategy, the requirements and guidelines for nuclear and radiation safety developed by the regulatory body, and the prospects for considering the Chernobyl resettlement areas for the siting of the facility.

Specialists of JSC TVEL of Rosatom State Corporation (Russian Federation), who participated in the session remotely, submitted reports emphasizing the scope of activities carried out by the Belarusian side to determine competitive areas and proposed positive assessments of the materials and preliminary conclusions presented for discussions.

Based on the results of discussion of the report materials, taking into account the arrangement of each competitive area according to natural and anthropogenic factors, a joint recommendation of the interdepartmental working group on further consideration and additional survey of 4 priority areas of potential site of radioactive waste disposal facility was formulated.
