Gosatomnadzor celebrates its 15th anniversary

The Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor) celebrates its 15^th anniversary. Gosatomnadzor was established as a separate structural unit of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 565 dated November 12, 2007 “On Certain Measures for the Construction of a Nuclear Power Plant” to perform regulatory functions in the field of nuclear and radiation safety.

Many years of previous experience of Promatomnadzor helped in solving the tasks assigned to the specialists of the newly established organization, but there were also completely new issues related to nuclear and radiation safety, directly related to the decision to build a nuclear power plant in the Republic of Belarus.

As for the organization, 15 years is not a big date. But our case is an exception. Our 15 years are not just the development of Gosatomnadzor as a separate organization. This is the development of the entire nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure of the Republic of Belarus in the context of the implementation of the country's first nuclear energy program. Last year, Belarus became the 33^rd state with an operating nuclear power plant and a safety infrastructure built according to modern IAEA safety standards. Gosatomnadzor has formed this infrastructure together with partner organizations, both Belarusian and foreign. The most important of the latter are the organizations of the nuclear technology supplier country – the Russian Federation.

15 years of development of the regulatory body in the field of nuclear and radiation safety is hard work, that required high professional skills and expert competencies, system-forming thinking, exactingness in relation to supervised organizations, perseverance in protecting the national interests of the Republic of Belarus, high diplomacy in relation to international partners, proactive communication with all interested parties, including the public.

On the occasion of the 15^th anniversary of its foundation, a celebration event was held in Gosatomnadzor, during which the Department was congratulated by the Minister for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus Vadim Sinyavsky, Heads of Departments of the Ministry for Emergency Situations, representatives of the National Center of Legal Information, organizations of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Energy, heads of organizations of the Belarusian system of technical support of the regulatory body in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, educational institutions that provide training and retraining of personnel on nuclear and radiation safety, foreign partners from the IAEA, the Russian Federation, Germany, Turkey, France, Uzbekistan, Switzerland, South Africa.

Gosatomnadzor continues to receive congratulatory addresses, including from the executives of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, the Office of the President of the Republic of Belarus, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Minsk City Executive Committee, the Grodno Regional Executive Committee, and other governing bodies and organizations.
