The 7th National Report of the Republic of Belarus for the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management has been submitted to the IAEA

The Republic of Belarus has prepared the 7th National Report for the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. It was developed by the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor) in cooperation with other interested state authorities. In accordance with international obligations the Report is available on the web-site of the Joint Convention with authorized access, which is administered by the IAEA. The document is also available for download on the web-site of Gosatomnadzor.

The Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management was adopted in 1997 and has the following objectives:

-         to achieve and maintain a high level of safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste management around the world by the enhancement of national measures and international cooperation, including a technical cooperation in the field of safety;

-         to ensure that at all stages of spent fuel and radioactive waste management there are effective defenses against the potential hazards in order to protect individuals, society and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation, now and in the future such that the needs and aspirations of the present generation will be met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs and aspirations;

-         to prevent the accidents with the radiological consequences and to mitigate their consequences if they occur during any stage of spent fuel or radioactive waste

In the Republic of Belarus the Joint Convention was ratified on 17 July 2002 and entered into force on 24 February 2003.

The 7th National Report contains a list of installations carrying out activity on the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste in the Republic of Belarus, the information about the State policy and practice in this area, the legislative framework, the implementation of recommendations from the consideration of the previous report and other information. The document covers the activities and events for the period from 2017 to 2020.

In accordance with the procedure the countries that have ratified the Joint Convention will study national reports of other Contracting Parties, post questions to them and will also provide answers to the questions to their own report.

The consideration of the National Reports will be held in May-June 2021 at the IAEA headquarters during the next Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties.
