Belarus and Poland continued regular information exchange for ensuring nuclear and radiation safety.

On January 21-24, 2019, a regular meeting of representatives of Belarus and Polish regulatory authorities in the area of nuclear and radiation safety was held in Gdansk within the framework of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Republic of Poland on Prompt Notification on Nuclear Accidents and Cooperation in the Area of Radiation Safety. The parties exchanged relevant information on a number of issues related to ensuring nuclear and radiation safety.

The Agreement between The Government of the Republic of Belarus and The Government of the Republic of Poland on Prompt Notification on Nuclear Accidents and Cooperation in the Area of Radiation Safety has been signed on October 26, 1994.

Activities within the framework of the Agreement have been intensified after the adoption of decisions in both countries on the implementation of nuclear energy programs.

The regulatory authorities in the area of the nuclear and radiation safety of Belarus and Poland cooperate both bilaterally and multilaterally at the platforms of IAEA, the Association of Nuclear Safety Regulators of Western Europe (WENRA), the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF).

The main topics highlighted by the representatives of Gosatomnadzor were: news on the development of regulatory infrastructure for nuclear and radiation safety in the Republic of Belarus, regulating the supervision of the construction of the Belarusian NPP, regulating activities of Gosatomnadzor regarding the commissioning and operation of the Belarusian NPP, the activities of the MES/Gosatomnadzor in the framework of Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) of the European Commission and interaction with the IAEA, Peer Review of the National Report on Stress Test at Belarusian NPP, progress in implementing the recommendations and IAEA mission’s recommendations and proposals for a comprehensive assessment of a regulatory infrastructure for nuclear and radiation safety (IRRS) in 2016.

In turn, the specialists of the Polish National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) told about the development of competencies in terms of licensing in the field of nuclear safety, safety supervision of the research reactor “Maria” (the only operating research reactor in Poland, located in Shverka-Otwock, near Warsaw), Advanced Licensing Exercise Project (ALEP), ongoing and planned cooperation within the framework of the IAEA technical cooperation program.

The sides expressed mutual satisfaction with the exchange of information on the state of nuclear and radiation safety that had taken place and agreed to maintain and strengthen bilateral contacts.
