On November 28-30, 2018 the Belarusian delegation took part in an International Ministerial Conference on nuclear science and technology. The event was held at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (Vienna, Austria). During the conference, the head of Gosatomnadzor, Olga Lugovskaya, made a presentation on the topic “From a post-Chernobyl country to a nuclear one: the experience of Belarus and the importance of ensuring radiation safety in the nuclear area”.

In the Republic of Belarus, a significant impact on the formation of the radiation safety infrastructure was influenced by the disaster at the Chernobyl NPP, its consequences and their overcoming. State systems were created for: radiation monitoring, control of radioactive contamination of food, farming at the affected territories, monitoring the health and treatment of the affected population, social protection, production of radiological equipment. At the same time, the use of ionizing radiation sources in medicine, industry and other areas was developing in the country, as well as fundamental and applied research, including nuclear, continued. The experience gained over the years were fully demanded and were used to develop the infrastructure of nuclear and radiation safety after the decision was taken to implement the first nuclear power program in the Republic of Belarus. Further systematic building up of this potential in relation to the nuclear field is a necessary condition for ensuring the safety and sustainability of nuclear technologies applications. The approaches and solutions used in our country in terms of the development of the infrastructure for regulating nuclear and radiation safety and its components are increasingly in demand and are of interest to other states, as well as international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency.
