The regulatory bodies in the field of nuclear and radiation safety of Belarus and the countries of Northern Europe agreed on practical measures for the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding

At the site of the 61st IAEA General Conference in Vienna on September 20, 2017, a meeting of representatives of the regulatory authorities in the  field of nuclear and radiation safety of the Republic of Belarus and the countries of Northern Europe (Norway, Sweden and Finland) was held, at which a draft plan of practical measures on implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding concluded a year earlier was discussed.

The plan, in particular, provides:

  • preparation and conduct of seminars on the development of the regulatory legal framework for nuclear and radiation safety and for the supervision of nuclear facilities;
  • thematic consultations on the issues of transboundary movement of ionizing radiation sources, as well as the role and participation of the regulatory body in developing strategies for the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel;
  • organization of visits of Belarusian specialists to participate as observers in the conduct of emergency training at nuclear power plants in the countries of Northern Europe;
  • the development of bilateral agreements on prompt notification of a nuclear accident and other activities that will be implemented in 2017-2018 and beyond.
